Goodridge braided brake hoses
October 03, 2005Vehicle: Land Rover Defender 90, 300 TDI, 1997.
Front hoses. Goodridge hose connector has groove after thread. This makes it smaller diameter and results “play” in mounting hole. Not good IMO, will probably help the nut to loosen more easily in long term.
There are 2 differences in rear hose connectors. The same groove as in front hose, but also connecting surface is different. Genuine hose uses flat surface, but Goodridge’s hose has sharper edge. This is even more problematic, IMO. Theoretically this sharp edge may ruin flat surface inside connecting unit so that if we want to use original hose with flat connector in the future, it will not give good connection any more. The included copper washer had no use in my vehicle, it was too thin.
Here is front brake hose mount. I have modified it using angle grinder from O to U shape to allow removing of brake hose/caliper without disconnecting these hoses. It is not as secure any more as before, but allows easy hub/brake disk removal without messing with oil.
When removing my old hoses I lost thread completely on both front hoses! These were about 7 years old hoses. I’m not sure why the thread came off, it did not look like the nuts were too rusty. Perhaps the nuts were more or less over tightened in the past? Good I do not need to install them back on. ;)
My conclusion: Brakes feel very good now, no more spongy feeling as with rubber hoses. However, I don’t like the difference in connectors compared to genuine hoses. Also, there are no washers included, so remember to source new 10mm internal tooth lock washers before you start installation.
